ASCE East Central Branch Education Committee
Our Mission: Encourage students to study and explore Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics (STEM) through outreach programs in the community and in direct support of local teachers.
How We Accomplish Our Mission:
1. Provide physical models and equipment for use in the classrooms or at local events such as the Orange County Science Fair
2. Maintain a pool of volunteers
3. Provide hands-on activities to encourage student involvement
To further the mission of the Education Committee we are collaborating with the following organizations:
Florida Engineering Society (FES): http://www.fleng.org/
Florida Water Environment Association (FWEA): http://www.fwea.org/
American Public Works Association (APWA): http://www.apwa.net/
Events Attended or Sponsored by the Committee:
Science Night at East Lake Elementary: The committee provides a Spaghetti Tower Building Activity that allows the students to build a tower of their own design. The tower is then placed on the shake table to simulate an earthquake.
West Point Bridge Designer: The committee hosts a local contest that is open to Elementary, Middle, and High School students. The committee with the assistance of the ASCE Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) and the Younger Members Forum (YMF) provide the prizes for this local contest. The Middle and High School students are then eligible to proceed to the ASCE Florida Section state level contest. Schools that participated include: Avalon Elementary, Windy Ridge K-8, Partin Elementary, Sanford Middle, Corner Lake Middle, Rock Lake Middle, Olympia High, West Orange High, Oviedo High, Edgewater High, Greenwood Lakes Middle, & Lawton Chiles Middle,
Environmental Excellence Day Workshop: Metropolitan Environmental Training Alliance (METRA) hosted this event in which the committee had a booth to exhibit the models that we have available in order to increase our pool of volunteers.
Teach-In: This event was attended by various members of the committe to different schools around Orange County.
Florida Water Festival: This event was hosted by FWEA next Lake Baldwin in Baldwin Park. The committe setup two tents at the event with the Aquifer Model, the Water Shed Model, and the Flume on display. ASCE Engineers spent the day demonstrating and explaining the models to people as they stopped by the tents.
Engineering, Planning, and Science Fairs: These events are sponsored by FES and involve engineers visiting local 5th grade classes to teach the students various engineering concepts. The fairs usually involve 5 or 6 presenters and last about two hours and consist of five or six 20 minute sessions. A key idea with each of the presentations is to make them hands-on to get the students involved and excited.
Fisrt LEGO League: The committe has two LEGO Mindstorms® kits, individual committee members typically host the team and guide the students in creating their robots.
Seminole County Science Fair: The committe sets up a booth at the science fair with some of the models we have available.
Orange County Science Fair:The committe sets up a booth at the science fair with some of the models we have available.
Odyssey of the Mind: Individuals from the committee volunteer their time to assist with the judging at this event.
SECME: Members of the committee volunteer for the local Balsa Bridge competition.
Lawton Chiles Middle School Earth Day: The committee has supported the Earth Day event by providing a booth and engineers to talk to the students.
