East Central Florida Section Chapter of the Geo-Institute
Please join us for the June 23rd 2010 ASCE Florida East Central Branch Geo-Institute Chapter Luncheon.
SPEAKER: Amr Sallam, Ph.D., P.E. – Geotechnical Services Director, Vice President – Nodarse & Associates, Inc.
TOPIC: Application of Finite Element Analysis in Geotechnical Engineering
The Finite element analysis (FEA) has been used in many engineering fields for more than 60 years, however, it has recently begun to be widely used for analyzing geotechnical problems. As Florida has become more urbanized, the need for rigorous analysis such as FEA has become even more vital when studying foundation systems and excavations in tight spaces. The presentation will include a brief history of the FEM and will answer some questions such as:
• In which cases is a FEA necessary?
• What are the typical applications of FEA in geotechnical engineering?
• What are the strong features of FEA?
• What types of analysis can be performed using FE?
• How can we build a FE Model?
• What are the available soil models?
In addition, a few case histories, in which FEA was used, will be presented.
