SEI Structural Technical Group

Innovations in Steel

SPEAKER:      Mr. Gerry McShane, VP Engineering with Skyline Steel

Speaker’s Biography:  Mr. Gerry McShane has more than 25 years of experience in the construction industry. Gerry has developed broad experience in ground engineering gained from periods in Contracting, as the owners Resident Engineer and in design with Civil engineering Consultants. Gerry has worked in many parts of the world including periods in Asia and Africa providing innovative steel options on a variety of construction projects.

Gerry is a chartered member of the Institution of Civil Engineers and the founding member of NASSPA (North American Steel Sheet Piling Association).

Topic Description: An innovative approach to utilizing structural grade steel products to fully take advantage of the properties they offer has lead to significant advances in load bearing applications. The combination of fast and simple construction as well as the ability to support substantial horizontal and axial load carrying capacity has led to the innovative use of sheet piling as the abutments of short span bridges. Where speed of construction and reduced cost are primary goals, this innovative application gives the designer an efficient solution to consider.  Details of the bridge abutment concepts along with case studies of current projects will be presented.

The construction industry has used eleven H-Pile sizes, within the HP-8, HP-10, HP-12 and HP-14 groups for over forty years. While the current range has performed exceptionally well, industry trends to heavier design loads have generated a need for more efficiency and higher capacity products. A new range of HP16 and HP 18 sections to meet this need has been launched and pile driving tests carried out. This development will be reviewed.
